Dorchester Woman Arrested in Connection to May Murder

A suspect has been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting in May in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston.

Officers arrested Jocelyn Vasquez, 32, of Dorchester, with the assistance of Stoughton police. Vasquez is expected to be arraigned on a murder charge in Dorchester District Court related to the shooting death of 33-year-old Garfield Thomas, according to Boston police.

Vasquez was arrested near 147 Seaver St. in Stoughton, police said.

Thomas, a Mattapan resident, was shot around 10:40 a.m. on May 15 on Evelyn Street, according to police. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he later died.

"This does not appear to be a random act at all," then-Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief William Gross said in May. "The parties are known to each other."

Bernadette Campbell, the landlord of the home where the shooting happened, said she was devastated by the fatal incident.

"These kids are going to grow up without a father," she said of the victim's children.

Campbell said the victim is a father of two who lived alone and had been renting from her for a year and a half. She said he never caused any problems as a tenant.

"He has kids and I'm pretty sure they visit him every now and again," she said.
