    Boston Police

Boston police arrested a man they say was carrying a handgun with 24 live rounds of ammunition on an illegal gun possession charge Monday.

The Boston Globe has reported that Dedrick served a lengthy prison sentence for shooting two state troopers in 1988.

Alonzo Dedrick, 55, of the city's Dorchester neighborhood, was arrested around 2:20 p.m., according to a news release from the Boston Police Department.

Officers pulled over a car in the area of Columbia Road and Washington Street in Dorchester after the driver didn't stop at a red light, police said. The driver, later identified as Frank Cinelli, 46, ran into a nearby parking lot, according to the release, and officers allegedly saw Dedrick clutching an object in his waistband as he got out of the car and ran away.

Officers recovered a semi-automatic 9mm handgun with 24 live rounds of ammunition after they arrested Dedrick. A second magazine with nine rounds of live ammunition were also recovered, according to the release.

Dedrick was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a high capacity feeding device, armed career criminal, drug possession with the intent to distribute and resisting arrest.

Cinelli was arrested, as well, and charged with speeding and failure to stop for a police officer.

In 1988, Dedrick was convicted for shooting two undercover narcotics troopers behind a gas station on Blue Hill Avenue, according to the Globe. He was found guilty of trying to kill one trooper and seriously injuring and robbing the other. He was released from prison in 2015, according to the Globe.
