Dozens of Campaign Signs Removed

Police say removing the signs is a civil offense subject to a $250 fine.

Portland , Maine, police are investigating after dozens of political campaign signs were removed and then arranged in a circle in a city park.

The 65 signs removed sometime Saturday night represented more than a dozen different candidates, of various political parties, and different ballot questions, so it does not appear as if any one campaign was targeted.

Still, police say, removing the signs is a civil offense subject to a $250 fine.

The signs were arranged in a circle on the ground at Deering Oaks Park.

State Rep. Ben Chipman, an independent, discovered the strange incident when he went to check on his own campaign signs.

No one has been charged.

Officers on patrol have been told to be on the lookout for campaign sign removal.
