Driver Gets 5-Year Sentence in Pregnant Woman's 2013 Death

Karen Blau was convicted of being drunk when she backed her car out of a driveway and fatally struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk.

DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) - A woman convicted of driving drunk when she struck and killed a pregnant woman on a sidewalk in Stoughton last year has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Karen Blau wept and apologized in court Friday to Joanne White's family. White's father spoke of his 35-year-old daughter's "beautiful smile."

Prosecutors say White was walking with her 11-year-old son when Blau backed out of a driveway on the other side of the street and ran into her. White, who was about three months pregnant, yelled a warning that saved her son. Blau's attorney said her car accelerated suddenly.

Blau, of Sharon, was convicted Wednesday on charges including motor vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated.

Norfolk Superior Court Judge Kenneth Fishman called her "horrifically reckless." He also sentenced her to eight years' probation after her prison term.
