Police in Hingham, Massachusetts are issuing a public safety warning while also giving credit to a driver who helped protect a college student who he found passed out in the middle of a local street.

Authorities said a motorist was recently driving in the town at 4:30 a.m. and saw a person lying passed out in the road at the top of a blind hill. The driver stopped and protected the person, an underage college student who was extremely drunk, until police were able to arrive.

The driver initially thought the student was an animal, swerved his vehicle around him and stopped when he realized a person was passed out. The motorist pulled his car into the road with his hazards on to protect the individual.

Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said they were, "lucky this wasn't a tragic event."

"Officers were able to wake him up," said Dearth. "Paramedics examined him and he didn't need any medical treatment."

Police used the incident as an opportunity to remind everyone to to be extra cautious since it's graduation, prom and school break season and people will be out celebrating.
