Man Rear-Ends Police Cruiser, Arrested for OUI

A man is facing several charges after he rear-ended a police cruiser in Cranston, Rhode Island early Saturday.

A police officer on patrol in a marked cruiser was rear-ended at the intersection of Park and Elmwood avenues just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The driver, Clay Sinatra, 24, of Middletown, was arrested after he failed a series of field sobriety tests. Officers say they also found an open bottle of vodka in Sinatra's car.

Sinatra was transported to police headquarters where he refused to take a breathalyzer test, police said.

He was held overnight and will be arraigned by a bail commissioner on a charge of OUI, police said. He will also receive traffic citations for refusing to submit a breathalyzer test and operating in the presence of alcoholic beverages. It is unclear if he has an attorney.

According to police, this is the second time in the past three months that a marked police car has been hit by an alleged impaired driver. No one was injured in either incident, but officials warn that if you are caught, you will be arrested.

Cranston police encourages anyone who suspects impaired drivers to call 911.
