Driver Accused of Fatally Hitting Woman, Injuring Pregnant Daughter in Lawrence Held on Bail

61-year-old Maria Rodriguez died after she was fatally struck in a pedestrian crash. Her 35-year-old daughter was also injured in the crash

The driver police say struck and killed a 61-year-woman and injured her pregnant 35-year-old daughter in Lawrence has been held on $25,000 bail.

The Eagle-Tribune reports that 22-year-old Franchersis German De Los Santos, of Lawrence, appeared in court on Monday on charges including motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, negligent operation and driving without a license.

Police say De Los Santos struck 61-year-old Maria Rodriguez and her daughter, 35-year-old Maryelin Torres, on Dec. 12. Rodriguez was taken to a hospital where she died.

De Los Santos told investigators she was trying to clear a foggy windshield with her hand before the crash. Authorities say De Los Santos doesn't have a Massachusetts driver's license.

De Los Santos' attorney, John Andrews, says "mechanical failure" caused the crash and his client immediately stopped.
