An elderly woman was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a car while leaving a polling place in Windham, New Hampshire.
Police said the woman, who has not been identified, was walking across the parking lot of Windham High School when a vehicle driven by an elderly man struck her. The man had been backing out of a parking spot.
Police already on scene to assist with polling responded and found the woman trapped underneath the vehicle. She was conscious and breathing.
Firefighters arrived with hydraulic tools to lift the vehicle up and were able to free the victim. She was then taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Her current condition is unknown.
Police said the driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, was not hurt.
An initial investigation shows that the driver had backed out of a parking space and put the vehicle in reverse. As he began to accelerate, he accelerated the vehicle backward and struck her.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Several towns away in Nashua, a driver suffering a medical emergency at a polling location crashed into two parked cars and died.
The accident happened around 8 am. Tuesday at the Bicentennial Elementary School in Nashua. No one was in the parked cars.
Police saw the crash and smashed the woman's car window to get her out. Police said CPR was performed, but the woman died at a hospital. Her name has not been released.
