If a Massachusetts school district does not receive $7 million from the city of Everett by Feb. 16, the superintendent says it will be forced to lay off 110 employees.
More than half of the employees impacted would be teachers. There would also be program cuts.
The bombshell announcement was made Monday night during a school committee meeting, where hundreds of concerned students, parents and teachers attended.
"Feb. 16? What are they going to do for the rest of the year? Who is going to teach the children?" asked Angela Solano, who is worried about her daughter and other students in the school.
After the meeting, the mayor said help is on the way.
"Four and a half million dollars — it's on the docket for Monday night for city council to vote, which I think will help a lot," said Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr.
However, the mayor would not commit to more funding, saying he plans to meet with the superintendent to iron out details to hopefully avoid teacher lay-offs.
