Ex-Bank Teller in Worcester Gets Month in Prison for Stealing Over $100K

A former teller at a Massachusetts bank has been sentenced to a month in prison for stealing more than $100,000 from elderly clients.

Jessica Vargas, who worked at Athol Savings Bank, was also ordered to pay more than $108,000 in restitution.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that an executive of the bank expressed disappointment with the sentence and said she fears it will not be enough to deter similar crimes.

The Athol woman pleaded guilty to bank fraud and embezzlement in February.

Federal prosecutors said she stole more than 55 times from eight customers, including a man that she knew was dying of cancer.

Vargas' attorney said her actions were wrong but that Vargas was struggling to provide for as many as 15 family members because of her husband's disability.
