‘Extreme Chunkin' Event Sends Pumpkins Sky High

Pumpkins will be flying for thousands of feet this weekend at the "Extreme Chunkin" event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Brian Labrie of Merrimack is currently the World Championship Pumpkin Chunkin Association record holder for longest launch at 4,684 feet. He leads a team of 21 members who use a 100-foot long pneumatic air cannon to launch pumpkins into the air.

Nearly two dozen teams are set to compete Saturday and Sunday in various categories using air cannons, trebuchets, catapults, torsions and human power. The Yankee Seige, a 56-foot high trebuchet from Greenfield, also will be launching other items, including a boat, grand piano, car and a 1 ,000-pound pumpkin.
