Faneuil Hall Marketplace to Celebrate 1976 Reopening

Reopening celebration to be held August 26-28

Faneuil Hall Marketplace will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its reopening by throwing it back to the 1970s with a disco dance party.

The popular marketplace in Boston reopened on Aug. 26, 1976, after extensive renovations.

The original market was opened in 1826 by Mayor Josiah Quincy. The retail marketplace is known for its cobblestone streets, restaurants, ethnic food stalls and street performers.

The reopening celebration will begin Friday and run through Sunday. Some food merchants plan to roll back their prices to what they were in 1976. Organizers also plan to have acrobats, jugglers and other performers to help ring in the anniversary.

The weekend will also include a car show at the marketplace, including a wide variety of antique cars.
