Tire Flies Off Truck, Killing 1 in Lexington, Massachusetts

Massachusetts State Police responded to a fatal car crash on Route 128 in Lexington on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Charles Hu, 26 of Lexington Mass.

Police say the accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. when a 1997 black Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling on Route 128 southbound lost its left rear wheel.

The wheel flew over the median, bounced off one northbound vehicle, a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by a 50-year-old Braintree man who was not injured, and then struck a second northbound vehicle, a sedan operated by Hu.

Hu was declared dead at the scene by emergency personnel. The tire impacted that vehicle in the area of the windshield and the roof.

"It bothers me," said John Eacrett, who was driving the Highlander. "I'm very fortunate that it wasn't me or a family member, but at the same time, I just want to express my sincere condolences to that man and his family."

The disabled Dodge Ram came to a stop in the southbound lane, just south of Exit 31. Police said that vehicle was driven by a 19-year-old female from Amesbury.
