Fatal Fire Landlord Charged With Manslaughter

A grand jury has indicted a Portland, Maine, landlord in connection with a fire that killed six people on Nov. 1, 2014.

Gregory Nisbet, the owner of 20 Noyes Street, has been indicted on six counts of manslaughter and four criminal violations of the Life Safety Code, according to necn affiliate WCSH.

Prosecutors say that Nisbet did not keep the residence up to code, and therefore has some responsibility for the deaths.

The blaze was the deadliest fire in Portland in 40 years. The fire was not intentional and was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.
