A motorcyclist died early Thursday morning after colliding with a Portland police vehicle on Route 66 in East Hampton.

Police said the crash happened at Route 66 and Route 151 in East Hampton at 1:24 a.m.

According to State Police, 27-year-old Evan Basso, of East Hampton, rode his motorcycle into the back of the police vehicle as the officer was making a left-hand turn onto Depot Hill Road.

Basso was thrown from the motorcycle and died of his injuries, police said.

Route 66 was closed for more than a mile and a half, from Payne Boulevard to Old Middletown Road, as police investigated the cause of the crash. The road has since opened.

The officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
