Police: Father, Son Killed in Tractor-Trailer Crash on Vermont Highway

A man and a teenager were killed on Sunday in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 89 in Sutton, Vermont.

Vermont State Police said troopers responded to the crash at about 4:30 p.m. on the southbound side of I-89, between exits 9 and 8, where the truck had rolled over.

Authorities said the driver, 46-year-old Peter Belanger, of Sutton, was ejected from the vehicle. His son, 15-year-old Andrew Belanger, was pinned in the cab.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said according to witnesses, the truck had suddenly veered to the left and crossed the center median. The truck then rolled over on its side and struck a steep embankment. In the process, it spilled several thousand gallons of fuel it was carrying.

Both lanes of the highway were shut down for several hours until crews could clear the scene.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
