A man and his 8-year-old son were injured Wednesday when they were hit by a car driven by a teenage relative in Bedford, New Hampshire.

Police and firefighters responded to the pedestrian crash at about 7:15 a.m. in the area of 169 Back River Rd., according to officials. There, they learned the 47-year-old man and his child were walking toward a school bus when they were hit by a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu.

The child suffered serious injuries and the man sustained minor injuries. They were both taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials later identified the 18-year-old driver involved in the crash as Trae Sealey. Authorities said the victims are his father and younger brother.

A preliminary investigation showed that Sealey didn't notice the pair as he was backing out of the driveway. Police said it appeared to be an unfortunate accident.

"Accidents like this occur all too frequently across the country when a family member fails to take notice of other people in a driveway or street when backing out," said Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski. "We urge all drivers to take the necessary steps to ensure the path behind their vehicle is clear of all persons or obstructions before backing up."

Police did not say if any charges would be filed.
