The fiery car crash that led to a 2-alarm fire after the vehicle crashed into a building in Massachusetts was the result of street racing, according to police.
Brockton police said an officer was patrolling the area of 40 Fredrick Douglas Ave. just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday when he came across a gray Audi A4 that had crashed into a building. The officer noticed the driver and passenger were outside the car and ordered them to move away from the scene.
Moments later, gasoline leaked from the car and the vehicle became engulfed in flames with the fire spreading to the building. The responding officer then called for backup at the scene.
Police said the city's surveillance cameras helped them determine that the crash happened after the Audi and a gray Volvo were racing westbound on School Street. The Audi passed the Volvo on the right side and hit a bump, making the driver lose control of the vehicle.
The driver, who was identified as 18-year-old Abraham Belice, and his 18-year-old passenger were taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center with minor injuries. Police did not identify the passenger, but said both teens are from Brockton.
Investigators have requested the Brockton District Court issue a complaint against 19-year-old Nicholas Damon, who allegedly drove the gray Volvo.
Belice was charged with racing a motor vehicle, speeding, destruction of property, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a passing violation.
