    Traffic Backup in Boston After Car Catches Fire in Tunnel

    A car caught fire in Boston's O'Neill Tunnel Sunday afternoon, causing severe traffic backup in the city. (Published Sunday, May 26, 2019)

    One lane of traffic remains closed in Boston's Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Tunnel following a fiery car crash.

    According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the car fire is now out and the right two lanes have reopened to traffic.

    According to Massachusetts State Police, the crash occurred on I-93 northbound just inside of the tunnel on Sunday afternoon. The car involved was fully engulfed in flames, prompting officials to detour traffic at exit 20.

    All occupants were able to safely escape the car, police said.
