One Killed in Fiery, 2-Vehicle Crash in Swansea

One person was killed early Thursday morning in a fiery, two-vehicle crash in Swansea, Massachusetts, according to state police.

Troopers responded to the crash on Interstate 195 at 2:10 a.m. where a Volkswagen Touareg had somehow lost control, crossed the median and struck a Jeep Liberty traveling on the westbound sound. The Jeep rolled over from the impact of the crash and became fully engulfed in flames.

Police said the driver, a 38-year-old man from Cranston, Rhode Island, was trapped inside the Jeep. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police said the driver of the Touareg, a 40-year-old woman from Bristol, Rhode Island, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Her exact injuries are unclear.

The right and middle travel lanes near exit 3 were closed for four hours while the scene was cleared.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
