Two-Alarm Fire Breaks Out at Mass. Marina

Crews are investigating a marina fire that incinerated 11 boats, sinking three, in Quincy, Massachusetts.

"It hurts because another era is gone," said Barbara Painter, whose boat was totaled. "But hey, life goes on."

The Quincy Fire Department says that the fire broke out Wednesday night at Captain's Cove Marina on 200 Cove Way. Investigators believe that a gas fire spread quickly from one boat to the others.

Painter lost her boat, as did Tamara Silvia and Justin Lowery. That couple had lived on their boat since August.

"We just sold everything to do this," Silvia said through tears. "We have nothing left now."

The fire is believed to have started on the boat owned by Steven Marks and his wife, Barbara. Their children say the boat was supposed to come out of the water for the season Thursday.

"This is essentially their summer home," said their daughter, Amy Marks. "We're on it all the time, never any problems."

"We were very limited because we only had one side to fight the fire from, so we took a defensive stance there," Deputy Fire Chief Gary Smyth said.

Divers suited up Thursday afternoon to start the salvage process.

Barbara Marks had been in the bathroom when she noticed some smoke, and she started to scream, alerting people on other boats to escape.

Neighboring fire boats came from Cambridge and Boston to get the blaze under control.

There are no reports of injuries. As of now, officials do not consider the fire suspicious. The cause remains under investigation.
