The town of Billerica, Massachusetts announced on Wednesday that sexual misconduct allegations at its fire department have lead to the suspension of four employees, including a demotion.
The town confirms that an investigation into the employees, whose identities have not been made public, began in April.
The four employees included three firefights and a dispatcher.
Town Manager John Curran said that the town is taking steps to prevent sexual harassment in the department, and will be drafting a policy on visitors and fraternization to prevent further issues.
In a statement, Curran said Billerica "has two competing obligations at this time. One is the public's right to know that this important matter was dealt with appropriately and the other is an obligation to respect employee's privacy in relation to personnel matters."
