Fire Destroys Chinese Restaurant in Prospect

Fire destroyed the Golden Wok Chinese restaurant in Prospect early Tuesday morning.

Prospect Mayor Robert Chatfield was at a nearby Dunkin' Donuts around 5 a.m. when he noticed the fire at 14 Waterbury Road/Route 69 and called for help, officials said.

"Smoke was coming out the front door," Chatfield described. "Seconds upon my arrival, fire blew out of the building because the windows were breaking."

Chatfield said Golden Wok was destroyed. All that's left is a shell of the restaurant.

"Just by looking inside, the interior is totally gutted," Chatfield said.

Firefighters from Waterbury, Cheshire and Bethany responded and got the fire under control within about an hour.

"There was heavy fire conditions pretty much all throughout the building," Prospect Fire Chief Jason Kolodziej said. "It's pretty bad inside."

No one was in the restaurant or an attached business at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The road was closed at Center Street, but has since reopened.

Connecticut State Police and the Prospect Fire Department are investigating to determine the cause of the fire. It's not clear at this point if the fire is criminal in nature.
