Fitchburg State University is alerting people in the area to a report of gunshots.
The school said in a tweet after 11:30 p.m. that gunshots were heard in the area of Clinton Street and Orange Street. About an hour later, the school said the "situation near campus is under control."
The university said at 12:30 a.m. there is no serious ongoing threat.
People were asked to stay away from the area or seek shelter if they are nearby.
State and local police are investigating, the school said.
No further information was immediately available.
