    Former Boston Police Officer Sentenced for Illegally Buying Firearms for Friends

    A former Boston Police Officer was sentenced Thursday in connection with illegally purchasing two firearms on behalf of acquaintances, according to the Department of Justice.

    Adarbaad Karani, 38, of West Roxbury, was sentenced in federal court in Boston to three months in prison and one year of supervised release.

    Authorities said Karani was convicted in September 2018 following a five-day jury trial of two counts of making a false statement during the purchase of firearms and two counts of making a false statement in a record.

    Investigators say between November 2014 and September 2015, Karani used his police identification, acting as the "straw purchaser" of two firearms, a Glock, model 27, .40 caliber pistol and a Glock, model 30S, .45 caliber pistol.

    The guns are not available to the public and for police use.

    One of the firearms purchased ended up being stolen from the person Karani bought it for. The firearm was recovered by law enforcement during the arrest of Desmond Crawford, an alleged member of the Columbia Point Dawgs.

    Following Karani's arrest in May 2017, he resigned from the BPD.
