Former New England Mob Boss Moved to Halfway House

Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio, 87, is from Providence

Former New England mob boss Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio has been moved from prison to a halfway house.

A spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons says Manocchio was moved from a federal prison in North Carolina to a halfway house Tuesday. Manocchio was the head of the Patriarca crime family from the mid-1990s until 2009.

The 87-year-old Providence man pleaded guilty in 2012 to charges he organized a shakedown ring focusing on Providence strip clubs, generating as much as $1.5 million for the mob. He was sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison.

The prison spokesman didn't specify the location of the halfway house.

The closest halfway house to Providence is Boston's Coolidge House.
