Former Red Sox DH David Ortiz Surprises Boston Students With Baseball Hats

Just in time for opening day, Red Sox and city officials surprised students at Boston Public Schools with a special gift on Wednesday.

Former Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was joined by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang to surprise students at the Hurley K-8 School at 8:30 a.m. to hand out baseball hats.

The donation is part of the Sox "Calling All Kids" joint effort with JetBlue which is distributing 45,000 baseball hats to students at 104 schools in the city.

According to the Sox, Calling All Kids is an "effort to connect baseball to the next generation of fans."

Ortiz said he was honored to help the program and that he was happy to be back in Boston.

"Boston is always in my heart," he said.

The Red Sox' home opener at Fenway Park is Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
