4th Fire Reported at Wheaton College, Officials on Lookout for Arson Suspect

No injuries were reported in the latest blaze

Norton fire officials said they responded to a fourth fire on Sunday at Wheaton College, where authorities determined fires were being set intentionally.

The most recent blaze was reported at 11:30 p.m. in a trash barrel in a dorm’s laundry room, according to Norton Fire Department Capt. Jason Robbins. Students from the dorm were temporarily displaced during the investigation and have since been able to return.

No injuries were reported in the latest blaze.

On Sunday morning, fires were set in second-and-third-floor bathrooms at the McIntire Residence Hall, prompting evacuations for approximately 100 students.

Wheaton College President Dennis Hanno said the school has increased campus patrols and is urging students and staff to be on the lookout and report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on the recent string of fires can confidentially call campus police or the Arson Hotline. The Arson Hotline is part of a program that provides up to $5,000 for information that solves a case and is 1-800-682-9229.
