Funeral arrangements are underway for fallen firefighter Christopher Roy, who died on Sunday morning in the line of duty.
The Worcester Fire Department firefighter perished after he responded just before dawn to a 5-alarm blaze at an apartment on Lowell Street. Roy, 36, was trapped on the second floor of the structure along with four other firefighters. He managed to escape via ladder and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Roy, a Shrewsbury resident, was honored with two processions on Monday, when his remains were taken from UMass Medical Center in Worcester to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Boston and then back to a funeral home in Worcester. First responders lined the streets to salute the firefighter while mourners laid flowers outside the Webster Square Fire Station as a token of their sympathy.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church. Roy’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday also at St. John’s Catholic Church. He will be laid to rest immediately after at Notre Dame Cemetery.
Roy was a 2-year veteran with the department. He is survived by his 9-year-old daughter, Ava Roy, and other family members.
Worcester Firefighters IAFF Local 1009 has established a memorial fund in the name of Ava Roy. Those who wish to contribute can make a check payable to the AVA ROY FUND and send it to:
