GPS Used to Rescue Lost Teen Hikers

Officers say the girls, Elizabeth Silvis-Chandley and Elizabeth Maloney, both of Amherst, started their hike on the Wapack Trail in Greenfield at about 6 p.m. Thursday

New Hampshire Fish and Game officers say they used GPS coordinates from a 911 cellphone call to find two 17-year-old hikers overcome by darkness at North Pack Monadnock Mountain.

Officers say the girls, Elizabeth Silvis-Chandley and Elizabeth Maloney, both of Amherst, started their hike on the Wapack Trail in Greenfield at about 6 p.m. Thursday. They made it to the summit of North Pack Monadnock, then started hiking south when they it got dark. They called at about 9:30 p.m., saying they were unsure of their location and were relying on flashlight apps on their phones, which had limited battery life.

The girls were found on the Wapack Trail in Temple just north of the summit of Pack Monadnock just after 10 p.m. They were not hurt.
