Golfers Break Out Clubs to Celebrate New Year's

Dozens of golfers in Maine took advantage of the clear fairways and participated in a New Year's Day tournament.

It's not the usual way to spend New Year's Day, but dozens of golfers in Maine from Orono to Falmouth broke out the clubs and hit the links Thursday.

Harris Golf operates nine courses in Maine and decided Wednesday that conditions were good enough at four courses to open up for a New Year's Day tournament.

Nearly 40 golfers signed up to play at Mere Creek in Brunswick. It was below freezing and the golfers needed hammers to get the tee's in the ground, but that was a small adjustment to make for the chance to play golf in Maine on January 1. According to Matt Barnard, marketing director at Harris Golf, "This is a badge of honor to get out and say I played the first round of golf in 2015."

This the first time in several years the fairways have been clear of snow and Harris Golf has been able to open courses on New Year's Day.
