Hernandez Cousin Hopes to Avoid Further Prison Time

Singleton is asking Massachusetts judge to spare her from more jail time, citing her cancer

Aaron Hernandez’s cousin, Tanya Singleton, is asking a Bristol County judge for leniency when it comes time for her sentencing, citing her failing health.

Singleton’s attorney has asked the judge to sentence her to one year behind bars, with a credit for 196 days already served, and the rest suspended with home confinement.

Singleton has pleaded not guilty to criminal contempt for refusing to testify before a Bristol County grand jury, despite immunity, but is expected to change her plea to guilty on Tuesday.

Singleton’s doctor, in court paperwork, says she is dying from breast cancer. The cancer had been in remission, but has returned and spread.

In a letter to the judge, Singleton's doctor says she shouldn't go to jail. Serving jail time could cause "disruptions" in her breast cancer treatment.

Her attorney says she was in remission before originally going to jail. He blames her rapidly deteriorating condition on her jail time because it caused a break in her treatment.

Her doctor says, "further disruptions" would definitely have a negative impact on Singleton's quality of life and how long she lives.

Her doctor also says her breast cancer is metastatic and because of that, she will ultimately die.

Singleton also faces a charge of criminal contempt in Suffolk County, where Hernandez is accused of murdering two more men.

In Bristol County, she faces another charge of conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact to murder for allegedly helping Hernandez’s alleged associate Ernest Wallace help escape after the Odin Lloyd’s killing.

She's pleaded not guilty to that charge.

Hernandez is currently behind bars awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty to all three murders.
