Historic Doyle's Cafe in Jamaica Plain Closes After 137 Years

The Washington Street bar is closing because rent became too high in the Boston neighborhood, owners say

A legendary bar in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood is now closed for good.

Saturday night was last call for Doyle's Cafe, which opened in 1882.

Over the years, the charming Washington Street pub became known for hosting politicians and celebrities.

Doyle's owners say they're closing because the rent became too high in the neighborhood, but patrons say they're sad to see it go.

"I think it's sad, it's a travesty," one man said. "I hope they're moving for all the right reasons."

The bar's liquor license was sold to a new steakhouse in Boston's Seaport District. It's unclear what will happen to the bar's space in Jamaica Plain.
