Homicide Suspect in Custody After Standoff in Providence

A man is in custody following a fatal stabbing and hours-long standoff in Providence, Rhode Island.

WJAR-TV reported that officers used force to enter a building on Tobey Street Tuesday morning where the suspect, Nathan Spardello, 28, was seen being taken out on a stretcher.

No other injuries were reported.

Police said Spardello had been wanted in connection with the death of a 46-year-old man who had been stabbed multiple times at 62 Russo St at about 3:15 p.m. Monday. The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police told WJAR-TV that the stabbing stemmed from some sort of domestic disturbance which started at another location in Providence.

Following the stabbing, authorities say Spardello fled to Tobey Street where he held a resident hostage for hours until police were able to get inside the building.

"They were able to breach open the door, a taser was deployed, the suspect was taken into custody and there are no injuries," said Providence Police Maj. Michael Correira.

Police say Spardello is facing multiple domestic charges. It's unclear what other charges he is facing.

The investigation is ongoing.
