Husband Arrested After Wife Found Dead in Groton Home: Police

Groton police found 57-year-old Mary Fairbairn dead in her home from apparent stab wounds

The Massachusetts woman who was found dead in her Groton home over the weekend has been identified, and officials say her husband was arrested after he called 911.

Groton police responded Saturday around 5:30 p.m. to a Lowell Road home for an unresponsive woman. Responding officers encountered the alleged 911 caller, later identified as 62-year-old Gregory Fairbairn, who lived at the home.

Police subsequently located the victim, Fairbairn's wife, later identified as 57-year-old Mary Fairbairn, dead in the home from apparent stab wounds.

Gregory Fairbairn was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Additional charges are expected, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

People who live in the community say they are shocked to hear Mary Fairbairn was allegedly stabbed to death.

Neighbor Alyssa Dallas says her husband was taking a nap with their son when she saw an ambulance at the driveway.

Dallas says shock is the best way to describe learning of Mary Fairbairn's death.

"She was a kind woman, she was very caring, she was always looking out for me," she said. "It's awful, it's really sad. There's not really words to describe how it feels. It's really surreal. I don't think anyone's brain ever goes to the fact that violence of this magnitude is possible."

Gregory Fairbairn is being held at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction and is expected to be arraigned Monday in Ayer District Court. It's unclear if he has a lawyer.

The investigation into Mary Fairbairn's apparent homicide is ongoing.
