Rockland Day Care Set to Close in June

Parents across the South Shore are rushing to find child care following the announcement that Rockland Day Care will be closing in June.

A day care center in Rockland, Massachusetts, will have to move out of the old school it occupies this summer after the town decided to shut down the building in a move that blinded administrators and parents.

Rockland Day Care, which serves more than 300 families, has until June 13 to leave the McKinley School on Union Street.

The day care director, Janet Tait, said a broken sprinkler system prompted the town to close the school.

“This was very difficult news to hear,” she said. “It’s not fair to our families to be scrambling for care.”

Parents said the decision will force them to find other options for their children.

“It would be a travesty if it did close,” said Jennifer Holland, whose kids attended the day care three years ago when it nearly closed over money issues. “I would’ve been in so much trouble. I would have had no place to send my kids. My kids’ pre-school would have been affected.”

It’s unclear whether the day care will be able to relocate by June.

The Town of Rockland could not be reached for comment.

Tait said the town will hold a meeting on Monday to discuss its decision to close the school.
