Inmate Dies Several Days Before Release

Authorities are investigating the death of a Vermont inmate who was hospitalized days before she was to be released

Authorities are investigating the death of a Vermont inmate who was hospitalized days before she was to be released.

State Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says 43-year-old Annette Douglas died Friday after spending two days at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She was an inmate at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility and was scheduled to be released Wednesday.

Pallito said Douglas was sent to prison Dec. 28 for allegedly violating a community service sentence for a petty larceny conviction. He confirmed she was moved to a special housing unit after allegedly threatening someone.

Pallito said Douglas had a medical condition, but he was not able to discuss it, citing privacy laws.

Douglas' sister, Melissa Monfreda, tells WCAX-TV her sister had a drug problem, was depressed, and diabetic.
