Insanity Defense Sought for Worcester Man Charged With Killing Mother

A 2018 psychological evaluation authorized by a judge found 28-year-old John Madulka competent to stand trial

The lawyer for a Massachusetts man charged with killing his mother plans to use an insanity defense.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that a 2018 psychological evaluation authorized by a judge found 28-year-old John Madulka competent to stand trial.

But in a motion filed Wednesday, the defense says an earlier evaluation conducted while the case was pending in district court determined that the Worcester man is mentally ill.

A psychologist said Madulka had not taken his medication for months triggering "acute symptoms" of schizophrenia.

Prosecutors say Madulka beat and stabbed 56-year-old Ellen Madulka to death in December 2017.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Madulka's attorney, Michael Hussey, and prosecutors plan to seek testimony from mental health experts.

No trial date has been set.
