Police in Manchester, New Hampshire, say an officer was assaulted by an intoxicated man at Elliot Hospital.

The suspect, 35-year-old Stephen Simpson, was allegedly yelling, swearing, and causing a disturbance Tuesday night. Officer Edward Devereaux entered Simpson's room several times between 8 and 9 p.m. to calm him down; however around 9 p.m., Simpson became aggressive towards a security staff member and clenched his fists at her.

Officer Devereaux stepped in at this point and Simpson allegedly punched the officer. As he was placed in handcuffs, he allegedly scratched Officer Devereaux's face, causing two minor lacerations to the officer's left cheek.

Simpson has been charged with simple assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. He was medically cleared and transported to police headquarters.
