Intoxicated Swimmer Prompts Hours-Long Rescue Operation

An intoxicated swimmer was found close to Peddocks Island near Hull, Massachusetts, late Friday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Around 10:45 p.m. the Coast Guard received reports of a person in the water. A motor life boat crew began searching for the person and an urgent marine broadcast was issued. Shortly thereafter, the Hull Harbormaster reported that the person swam to Peddocks Island wearing a life jacket.

A commercial tow vessel picked up the man and brought him to the motor life boat crew. The man had a cut on his foot and appeared intoxicated, according to the Coast Guard. The man was taken by EMS for further care.

The man gave inconsistent reports as to whether there were other people with him in the water. A helicopter crew joined the Hull Harbormaster, Boston Fire and Mass Port boats in searching the water for others in distress.

The man gave the Coast Guardsman names of people who were allegedly in the water with him. Upon investigation, those people were reached by phone around 12:30 a.m. and said they were never in the water and were safe on land.
