Intruder Call Leads RI Police to Investigate Suspicious Items

Police in Rhode Island say a call about an intruder led to an hours-long investigation involving the bomb squad and a hazmat team.

Westerly Police Capt. Shawn Lacey says Sunday is the second time in two days that police responded to the caller's address for reports of an intruder -- both times finding no one. Police also identified a number of suspicious wired devices and chemicals inside the home, alongside a number of firearms which were later cleared by police.

Lacey says the bomb squad searched the home and found no evidence of explosives. State Department of Environmental Management officials say the chemicals were not hazardous.

Police have not said if charges will be filed. The home's resident has been transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.
