Boston College Students Worried Amid Reports of Peeping Tom

Students at Boston College are reacting to reports that a man was seen peering into a freshman dorm on Sunday. (Published Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019)

Students at Boston College are being urged to keep their windows and doors locked after a man was seen peering into windows at a residence hall.

"It's honestly disgusting," student Patrick Keane said. "I really hope they catch the guy soon."

The person was spotted Sunday night looking into ground-level windows at Kostka Hall on Shaw Road in Newton, Massachusetts, police said.

"So we heard that some creepy guy was like lurking around Kostka and trying to talk to people. And he had like a red beard I think," student Isabel O'Hara said.

While many students are aware of the incident, others learned of it days later.

"I didn't even know it was going on so...," student Keegan Coppola said.

The man is described as being 5'7" and between 25 and 35 years old with a red goatee. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a white sweatshirt, baggy black pants, black sneakers and a red baseball cap.

O'Hara worries that Kostka is an easy target because of its visibility from the road, and because students are always coming and going from the dorm, possibly making it easy for someone without a student ID to enter.

"I mean obviously BC is very safe. No one is gonna be like let me let this random guy in, but it is kind of possible," she said.

Students are not panicking, but rather using the incident as a reminder to stay vigilant.

"It's one of those things that you feel like it could never happen here. And you feel like it could never happen to you," Coppola said.

There have been no other Peeping Tom incidents at Boston College within the recent past, according to university spokesman Jack Dunn.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. People on campus are being asked to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to police. Anyone with information is asked to call 617-552-4440.
