Girlfriend of James ‘Whitey' Bulger Released From Federal Prison, Will Live In Cape Cod Halfway House

Catherine Greig to finish her time in federal custody at an undisclosed halfway house in Barnstable County

The longtime girlfriend of the late Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger is back in Massachusetts after her release from a federal prison in Minnesota.

Catherine Greig arrived in Boston on Wednesday morning after being released from the Federal Correctional Institution-Waseca.

According to a letter sent to the family of one of Bulger's alleged victims, Greig is being sent to a halfway house in Barnstable County on Cape Cod.

Stephen Davis' sister Debra was one of Bulger's alleged victims and he is not happy about Greig's release.

"It's a slap in the face to every one of us, as the victim's families," Davis said.

Although it's unclear which halfway house she will stay at, the 68-year-old will be required to wear an ankle bracelet until her release from federal custody in July 2020.

It was Greig's face that ultimately helped the Federal Bureau of Investigation find Bulger hiding out in a Santa Monica apartment in June 22, 2012.

Greig fled Boston with Bulger in late 1994 after Bulger's FBI handler, John Connolly Jr., warned him that he was about to be indicted. With a $2 million reward on his head, Bulger became one of the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" criminals, just below Osama bin Laden.

Once captured, Bulger was convicted in 2013 of taking part in 11 murders in Boston between the 1970s through 1900s.

Bulger was found beaten to death in his cell on Oct. 30, 2018, just hours after his transfer from a Florida prison to one in West Virginia. Authorities said the 89-year-old was repeatedly hit with a lock stuffed inside a sock. His body was positioned to make him appear as if he were sleeping.

Greig was sentenced in 2012 to eight years in prison for helping Bulger to evade capture.

Her twin sister, Margaret McCusker, told NBC10 Boston she hadn't yet talked to Greig about the move to the halfway house but knew she would hear from her soon.

"Strange, because, I mean, it's my twin sister," she said outside her South Boston home. "We were always so very close, and now I have to get to know her all over again, and it's just odd."

McCusker has been waiting years to reconnect.

"I'm thrilled my sister is out and I'm dying to see her," said McCusker. "I think it will be good. You know, she'll miss Jimmy. She does now. But it will be good."

McCusker said Greig loved Bulger "unconditionally" and had no regrets about living in hiding with him for so long.
