Johnson & Wales Buys Closed Nightclub for $1.6M

Officials at Johnson & Wales University say the school has completed its purchase of a Providence, Rhode Island, nightclub that closed after a shooting last year.

The college announced Tuesday it paid $1.6 million for former Club Karma and the adjacent parking lot.

Senior Vice President of Administration Marie Bernardo Sousa says the two-story building is within walking distance to many of the school's academic and student services facilities.

Club Karma lost its liquor license in February 2014 after two men were injured in a shooting. The former owner then announced plans to sell the club.

A school spokeswoman says Richmond and Friendship LLC, a real estate company and the club's owners, approached university officials and asked if they wanted to purchase the property after a developer's plans for it fell apart.
