Judge Denies Reduced Sentence Request for ‘UNH Rapist'

Gary Fecteau has been incarcerated for more than 25 years for sexually assaulting two UNH coeds in Dover and Durham

A judge has denied a request for a reduced sentence for a convicted New Hampshire sex offender known as "the UNH rapist."

Gary Fecteau has been incarcerated for more than 25 years for sexually assaulting two UNH coeds in Dover and Durham, and trying to attack a third young woman in 1987.

Foster's Daily Democrat reports the Newmarket resident was seeking a sentence reduction of one year under a new law allowing judges to give credit for certain education programs completed in prison. Fecteau received his associate's and bachelor's degrees while incarcerated.

Judge Tina Nadeau says she denied Fecteau's request due to the violent and manipulative nature of his crimes.

Strafford County Attorney Thomas Velardi says Fecteau is one of the most dangerous criminals prosecuted by his office in 30 years.
