A New Hampshire middle school soccer coach accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl on two of his teams allegedly escalated their relationship from emailing her to sending explicit Snapchats.
Alexander Waterbury pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday in Cheshire County Superior Court.
The 24-year-old Keene resident is charged with four counts of felony sex assault and giving alcohol to a minor. According to prosecutors, he admitted to police to having a sexual relationship with an underage girl.
The 14-year-old victim was one of Waterbury's students when he coached the Monadnock Middle School Girls Soccer team last fall, Cheshire County Attorney Chris McLaughlin told the judge. She was also allegedly a player on his U-15 travel team this spring.
“The defendant obtained the victims cell number and asked her to walk his dog,” McLaughlin told the judge.
The relationship started via email, then text, and then progressed to a sexually explicit conversation on Snapchat, McLaughlin said. Last week, Waterbury allegedly had sex with the teenager four times and gave her alcohol twice.
All Monadnock Regional School District employees undergo background checks, its superintendent told NBC10 Boston, and the school district is “shocked by these troubling allegations.”
So too are area residents.
“It makes me very mad, it’s disgusting, absolutely disgusting,” said Shane Burdell of Keene.
“I think it’s terrible,” said Bill Swinburne, also of Keene.
The accusations came to light Sunday. The school district fired Waterbury immediately, but court paperwork shows he continued sending the victim messages on Snapchat. In one message he told her, “I literally lost the best job in the world. You know how that happened.”
An arrest warrant was issued for Waterbury and he was arrested on Tuesday.
The prosecutor told NBC10 Boston there is growing evidence that there may be more victims in this case.
“The detective in the case has heard from other people, whether parents or girls themselves, about texts that they had received from him,” McLaughlin said.
Waterbury is being held without bail until another hearing on that evidence next week.
