Large Estate Bursts Into Flames in Newport, Rhode Island

A large estate burst into flames Thursday in Newport, Rhode Island.

Crews battled a 3-alarm fire that broke out around 4:30 p.m. at the Stonor Lodge, a historic mansion on Bellvue Avenue.

It quickly became an inferno.

"It did spread extremely fast," said Newport Fire Captain Stephen Knapman. "By the time we were here, it was already fully involved."

The property was sold three years ago. Neighbors say the new owners were transforming it into their dream house.

The Stonor Lodge, originally built in the late 1800s, was reportedly where Jackie Onassis spent the day before her Newport wedding to John F. Kennedy.

Neighboring Portsmouth, Middletown, Jamestown and North Kingstown provided mutual aid.

The home is now destroyed.

At this point, the fire is not considered suspicious, but investigators have not yet been able to get into the home.
