Late Week Coastal Storm to Kick Off March

After a foggy start to our Monday, as everyone is heading back to work and school (at least in Massachusetts), we’ll see sun-filled skies behind wispy clouds this afternoon with high temperatures stretching into the 50s. The next few days will continue to be sun-filled and quiet, thanks to a dome of high pressure down to our southwest.

This will bring a pleasant and quiet end to the month of February, but changes are brewing for the start of the month of March. But before we usher in a new month, let’s talk about the next few days.

Tonight, under mostly clear skies, temperatures slide into the lower 30s south, 20s north. Tuesday brings highs near 50 south, upper 40s north under sun-filled skies.

Wednesday looks to be the warmest this week, not record-breaking like last week, but we’ll see highs into the mid to upper 50s south, upper 40s north, with some border showers and flurries as a weak low pressure dissipates as it crosses the northern tier of New England. Elsewhere doesn’t see precipitation until late week.

As early as Thursday night is when we will see the first raindrops in southern New England. This is associated with the system that we’ve been monitoring every model run. The system first impacts the Midwest and quickly slides off the coastline, skimming the southern coast of New England. The system starts to strengthen, bringing strong gusty onshore winds out of the northeast Friday morning and into the early afternoon. Gusts could top at 50 to 60 mph from Cape Ann to the Cape Cod and the Islands.

The timing of the system also coincides with the astronomical high tides, making coastal flooding, battering surf, and beach erosion a concern. There are still some uncertainties in terms of location and timing of the colder air arriving, making for a tricky wintry precipitation forecast for Friday. We’ll have a better handle on that as we get closer.

High temperatures will be into the upper 30s to low 40s late week and into the weekend. The system sticks around through Saturday, making it a few days of gusty winds, battering waves at the coastline.

As of today, we could get rain at the coast, mix towards the interior and snow in southern Vermont and southern New Hampshire according to the latest weather models.

Looks like for now, Maine will receive some rough surf at the coast, gusty winds, but the precipitation will likely remain to the south.

Sunday will bring some relief from that system, in terms of wind, but it’s likely we will still see mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures return back into the 40s for highs next week.
