Lawmakers Respond to Beverly Scott Nomination

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is reserving judgement on President Obama's nomination of Former MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott for a seat on the National Transportation Safety Board - the board that investigates major transportation accidents.

"I think that that is the decision of the president, and this is something the commerce committee will look at," she said.

Scott resigned in February amid controversy following the collapse of the mass transit system during one of the state's worst winters on record, and now some are questioning why she was chosen and if her record in Massachusetts will be scrutinized by the Senate.

"This nomination is not even 24 hours old yet, so there's plenty of time, believe me," said Warren. "If you ever take a look at the paperwork for one of these things, there will be plenty of information that will be given to the United States Senate."

Sen. Ed Markey says Scott will receive a full and fair hearing in the Senate and that there will be questions about every aspect of her career.

"The president has made a decision and I think respect has to be given to the president," he added. "The totality of her record in public and private life will be the subject of the hearing and all of it will be put before us."

Congressman Joe Kennedy assumes questions about her leadership of the MBTA will come up as questions would for any nominees record in public service.

"I think people from Massachusetts have some concerns over what happened over the course of last winter. Her record, I think, deserves careful examination throughout the course of her time in public office," said Kennedy.
