Lawyer: Fatal Stabbing Incident in RI Was Self Defense

The attorney for a Providence, Rhode Island, man accused of fatally stabbing another man says it was a case of self-defense.

Richard Sostre was charged with murder Wednesday after police said he fatally stabbed 52-year-old William Rodriguez in the city's Mount Pleasant neighborhood on Tuesday morning.

Attorney Michael Lombardi says Sostre was visiting his mother's house when Rodriguez tried to break in to the upstairs part of the house. He says Rodriguez was living in the basement of the building and stands a foot taller than Sostre.

Lombardi says the stabbing was in self-defense and is "not a brutal stabbing as the attorney general's office portrays it."

Sostre was arraigned Wednesday and is scheduled for a bail hearing on Nov. 30.

The death was the city's 10th homicide this year.
